River Wild Camper Vans are the perfect way to experience Alaska in winter!

Our vans are built for winter adventures, with a heater you can operate even when the van is turned off. They’re fully insulated to help keep the interior warm and cozy, even when the temperatures outside drop.

Each van is designed for comfortable off-grid camping, with solar panels that charge your house batteries so you can enjoy the freedom to explore without being tied to a campground. Every van also has a sink, making it easy to brush your teeth, wash up, and start each day feeling refreshed.

And you won’t have to worry about packing all the little things. Your van comes fully stocked with the camping gear and essentials you’ll need for a successful adventure.

For winter travelers, we also have AWD vans with studded tires, giving you added traction and confidence on Alaska’s winter roads.

Winter is such a unique time to visit Alaska. The landscape transforms into an incredible winter wonderland, with snow-covered mountains, quiet roads, and a peacefulness you simply don’t experience in the summer.

There’s something magical about being out here when everything slows down. The crowds disappear, the scenery feels endless, and you can truly feel connected to the wild beauty surrounding you.

It feels like Alaska is all yours. ✨

❄️ 7-Night Alaska Winter Camper Van Adventure

Day 1 — Anchorage → Seward

Drive: ~2½ hours

Start your adventure by heading south along the spectacular Seward Highway.

  • Pick up your River Wild Camper Van

  • Stock up on groceries and winter snacks

  • Drive along Turnagain Arm

  • Stop at Beluga Point for mountain and water views

  • Continue through Girdwood and along the Kenai Peninsula

  • Arrive in Seward

  • Explore the harbor and historic downtown

  • Enjoy dinner and a cozy evening

    • We recommend the Cookery delish modern cuisine.

  • Camp overnight in Seward

    • We recommend boondocking at the Iditarod Campground! It's close to everything in town with sweeping views of resurrection bay. There is no fee to camp until the beginning of May.

❄️ Winter highlight: The drive itself is an experience. Snow-covered mountains surrounding Turnagain Arm can be spectacular.

Day 2 — Explore Seward

Give yourself a full day to experience Seward without rushing.

For a winter trip, I wouldn't promise a Kenai Fjords cruise—the scheduled park boat tours generally stop by the end of September.

Day 3 — Seward → Homer

Drive: ~4 hours

Today is a beautiful winter road trip across the Kenai Peninsula.

  • Enjoy a leisurely morning in Seward

  • Head north toward Sterling

  • Stop along Kenai Lake

  • Continue toward Soldotna/Kenai

  • Grab lunch along the way

  • Continue south toward Homer

  • Arrive in Homer in the afternoon

  • Drive out to the Homer Spit

  • Walk along the beach and take in views of Kachemak Bay

  • Watch the sunset over the mountains

  • Camp overnight in Homer

    • We recommend boondocking in Mariner Park Campground

  • Dinner in Homer

    • Fat Olives is a great Italian restaurant.

  • Shower in Homer

    • Washboard in Homer

🌊 Winter magic: Homer becomes wonderfully quiet in winter. It's a completely different experience from the busy summer fishing season.

Day 4 — Explore Homer

This is one of the days I'd intentionally leave open for travelers to choose their own adventure.

Option 1 — Winter adventure

  • Cross-country skiing

  • Snowshoeing

  • Snowmachining

  • Downhill skiing/snowboarding at the Homer Rope Tow $10/ea

Homer has more than 80 km of winter ski trails, and snowmachiners have access to more than 90 miles of groomed trails.

Option 2 — Cozy Homer

  • Slow breakfast

  • Explore Pioneer Avenue

  • Visit the Pratt Museum or Alaska Islands & Oceans Visitor Center

  • Browse local galleries

  • Enjoy a long lunch

  • Drive the Homer Spit

  • Grab coffee and watch the winter light over Kachemak Bay

    • Two Sisters Bakery is not open everyday but it's so good if it is open!

  • Dinner in Homer

    • Twisted Goat

Second night in Homer.

Day 5 — Homer → Girdwood

Drive: ~5–5½ hours

Today is another scenic road-trip day.

  • Coffee and breakfast in Homer

  • Take one last walk along the Spit

  • Begin the drive north

  • Stop in Cooper Landing for lunch and to walk around.

    • Sunrise Inn Cafe

  • Continue north along the Sterling and Seward Highways

  • Stop along Turnagain Arm as daylight allows

  • Arrive in Girdwood

  • Settle into camp

    • Camp (boondock) in Downtown Girdwood (Holmgren/Lindblad)

  • Enjoy a warm dinner and cozy evening

    • Chair 5

  • Shower in Girdwood

    • At the Girdwood Laundry & Showers

🍂 Winter highlight: The Kenai Peninsula looks completely different under snow. Give yourself plenty of time for the drive.

Day 6 — Girdwood Winter Day

After several days of driving, make this a play day.

Choose your adventure:

🎿 Skiing/Snowboarding Spend the day at Alyeska Resort.

❄️ Winter hiking Explore a winter trail with appropriate traction and gear.

  • We love Winner Creek

🚠 Alyeska Tram If operating during your dates, ride up for incredible views of the Chugach Mountains.

🧖‍♀️ Nordic Spa This is where I'd add the ultimate relaxation day.

After days of hiking and road-tripping, spend the afternoon soaking in the hydrotherapy pools, enjoying the sauna and steam rooms, and treating yourself to a salt scrub.

Second night in Girdwood.

Day 7 — Girdwood → Talkeetna

Drive: ~3½–4 hours

Today you leave the coastal mountains behind and head north toward one of Alaska's most charming little towns.

  • Enjoy breakfast in Girdwood

    • The bake shop for a cinnamon roll as big as your head!

  • Drive north toward Anchorage

  • Stop for fuel in Anchorage

  • Head north on the Parks Highway

  • Stop at a scenic viewpoint along the way

  • Arrive in Talkeetna by around noon

  • Browse local shops and galleries

  • Grab dinner and a local beer

    • Denali Brewpub

  • Look for the Northern Lights after dark

  • Camp overnight in Talkeetna

    • Swiss Alaska Inn - $15/night

🌌 Winter highlight: Talkeetna is particularly fun in winter, with Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, snow biking, winter events, and excellent Northern Lights potential on clear nights.

If the skies are clear this night, stay up late for one last chance at the Northern Lights. ✨
